Freewrite, makers of some of our favorite writing tools, have announced a robust update to their line of word processing instruments. Billed as “Distraction-free drafting tools,” these instruments allow you to focus on writing while keeping your thoughts backed up in a modern ecosystem. The Freewrite Smart Typewriter, Hemingwrite, and Traveler all get an update this week that brings new functionality to the devices.

Freewrite Firmware Update 1.6

In this new firmware update 16 new languages have been added along with 48 keyboard variations. The update also brings some performance fixes such as Improved performance for large documents and a fixed LED which was previously not turning off while in sleep mode.

To manually check for a firmware update

Option 1: Press right [new] + right [shift] + F
Option 2: hold the power button down for 3 seconds (version 1.5.0 or later) and select ‘Firmware Update’ in the device menu
If an update is available, your device will begin downloading the update immediately. To perform the manual check, your device must be running on firmware version 1.1.6 or higher.

Astrohaus has recently announced a new product in their word processor line called Freewrite Alpha. The Alpha is priced at $349, weighs two pounds and features a pop-out kickstand. It’s not as portable as the Traveler but it is still easy to bring along on the go.
