Spaceteam is a fast-paced multiplayer video and card game where crew members on a spaceship who must work together to complete various tasks in order to keep the ship running.
As a creator of many mediums of content, I’ve often had the opportunity to team build with creative groups. Whether at conventions, meet-ups, or work events, people usually appreciate the help of a game or activity to get people talking. One of my favorite games for these experiences is Spaceteam. Available as a mobile app or as a physical card game, Spaceteam is a fast-pasted game of keeping your spaceship together in the far reaches of space. This title is fast and gets people laughing together quickly. It works well as an app or as a board game so we can recommend either for your next ice-breaker event.
About Spaceteam
Spaceteam was first developed ad a cooperative multiplayer mobile game by Sleeping Beast Games in 2012. In this hectic cooperative game players take on the role of crew members on a spaceship who must work together to complete various tasks in order to keep the ship running. The game uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to connect players, and each person’s device displays different controls and instructions. Players must communicate with each other in order to complete tasks and avoid hazards, resulting in a chaotic and fun experience.
In Spaceteam players are presented with a variety of controls on their device’s screen such as buttons, levers, and dials. Each player’s device will have different controls, and it’s up to the players to communicate and work together to figure out which control corresponds to which task. As the game progresses, the ship will encounter various obstacles such as asteroid fields, black holes, and malfunctioning equipment, and players must work together to navigate these hazards and keep the ship running. Instructions and controls are displayed in a randomized order, and often use made-up technical terms and jargon, adding to the chaotic and frantic nature of the gameplay. The game features a variety of different ships to unlock, each with their own set of controls and hazards.
Spaceteam the Card / Board Game
The board game version of Spaceteam was created by the same developers as the mobile game and it is published by the publisher Gameweight games. The board game is designed for 2-6 players, and it combines elements of the mobile game with some new challenges. Players work together to fix their malfunctioning spaceship before it crashes. Each player has a unique control panel and must communicate with the other players to find the right instructions and fix the ship.
While the core mechanics of both games are the same, the board game version of Spaceteam includes new challenges and obstacles that are not present in the mobile game. These include the need to physically pass cards to other players and the addition of a ‘time warp’ mechanic which adds tension to the gameplay.
The Fun Part
Part of the fun in Spaceteam is that nobody ever really knows what is going on. The information is split between people and cards and you must communicate to overcome obstacles. The problem you face is that nothing really makes sense. The instructions and controls are presented in a randomized order and often use made-up technical terms and jargon. This usually results in mis-pronunciations, laughter, and hopefully a connection with another player within the time limit.
