Tinderblox: High-Stakes Campfire Dexterity in a Mint Tin

There are some games that you bring to the game meetup.. and then there are other games that you bring to the café to play with friends who know nothing about board games. Tinderblox is one of the latter. The rules are simple, the parts are cute, and  the mechanic looks easier than it is (thanks to slippery cards and itsy-bits).

Tinderblox, published by Alley Cat Games, is a masterclass in micro-game design, offering a portable dexterity challenge that prioritizes tension over complexity. A pocket-sized test of steady hands where players collaborate to build a tiny 3D campfire using logs and “embers” stacked with tweezers—knowing that one shaky placement ends their game.

What’s in the Tin

The retail edition of Tinderblox is remarkably compact. The tin contains an instruction pamphlet, 20 wooden logs, 20 “cinders” (10 red cubes and 10 yellow cubes), 1 campfire card (the base of the structure), 1 pair of tweezers, and 19 instruction cards that dictate each placement. And leave it to a Brit (tip of the hat) to jam a pun into the branding as well.

How to Play Tinderblox

To setup for Tinderblox: place the campfire card in the center. Arrange three logs as shown on the card. The player who most recently went camping goes first. On your turn, flip an instruction card and use the tweezers to add exactly what the card depicts. Options include a single log laid across two supports, a single cube perched on a corner, or an awkward multi-piece assembly that must be balanced before being placed.

A few constraints drive the game’s tension. First, you must place pieces onto the unstable structure itself rather than the flat surface of the card. Second, a hand symbol on certain cards forces you to use your non-dominant hand for the placement. Finally, if you collapse the campfire or knock pieces into a “fire hazard” state, the game eliminates you. Play continues until only one camper remains, though groups can opt for a cooperative victory if they clear the deck without a collapse.

Tinderblox In Action

The use of tweezers forces players to slow down, making every movement feel deliberate and high-stakes. The deck provides excellent pacing; early placements build the foundation and confidence, while the later stages create a heavy silence at the table as the “fire” reaches its breaking point. It is a rare game that manages to pack genuine physical drama into a container that fits in a pocket.

The Tiny Ritual

Tinderblox is our go-to icebreaker game for quiet meetups where we want something quick and fun to play with new player. We bring Tinderblox to coffee shop hangouts, dinner parties, and our monthly Silent Book Club along with a few other choice games. The game usually lasts a few rounds before we move onto something deeper or start another activity. Tinderblox acts as a palette cleanser between social activities for this crew. Recommended if you like light dexterity games.
